Your questions

WHAT CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP?

  • Acupuncture is a system of medicine. It has developed over at least 2,000 years to treat conditions of ill health in human beings. Modern diseases and conditions of ill health can be successfully treated with acupuncture.
  • Acupuncture can support people trying to overcome addictions such as those related to food, smoking or alcohol.
  • Acupuncture is effective in treating male and female infertility, miscarriage and problems with periods such as PMT.
  • People experiencing difficulties conceiving choose to have acupuncture alongside Assisted Reproductive technologies. Many report the benefits in supporting the experiences people have while undergoing IVF, including emotional stress.
  • Please see ‘Conditions Treated by Acupuncture’ for specific details.

WHAT HAPPENS?
Treatment will always start with a Diagnostic Consultation, of approximately 2 hours. Chinese medical diagnosis involves more than asking questions about your life, health and diet. Diagnosis relies on accurate pulse taking, found in the pulses located on both wrists, palpation of the skin, and examination of nails and hair and the tongue.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
The needs of each person vary: the focus of treatment is to match the clinical requirements of the condition and reasons for choosing acupuncture.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO FEEL?
During treatments people report feeling calmness and a feeling of deep relaxation. When needles are inserted, the sensation is often one of warmth, tingling or a dull ache. Occasionally people feel things in other parts of their bodies. Needles are not necessarily inserted into the part of the body with the symptoms. For example, a headache may be treated using needles in the hands or feet.

SHOULD I LET MY DOCTOR KNOW?
If you are taking medication, please inform your acupuncturist. Whether you chose to discuss having acupuncture with your doctor is left to your own discretion.

IS IT SAFE?
Acupuncture is considered to be very safe. Research shows that serious side effects are very rare, less than one per 10,000 treatments. The needles used are sterile, used once only and then disposed of safely.
